Houston Stunning Aerial Skyline Sunset

Stunning aerial panorama of the Houston skyline right as the sunset behind us and the clouds were back lighted with these wonderful colors of the sunset reflecting in the tall buildings that make up down town Houston. We got up close and personal in this image so we could capture it with the highway and all these modern skyscrapers in the skyline from this angle of the city in downtown area looking toward the Theater District. This is a popular spot for the performing arts and it runs along the Buffalo Bayou in downtown. Using a aerial drone allowed us the ability to capture the image from a different perspective and since we use a full frame professional camera for our aerial images it has the highest resolution possible so it can be enlarged up to 108 x 35 without loss of any detail. Houston has a beautiful skyline on any day but today’s was exceptional with the help of our drone, so thanks for looking.

Capture this aerial panorama of Houston Skyline right as the sun was setting and as it was going down it started to back light these wonderful clouds over the city with these wonderful colors of orange, pinks and yellows. We wanted to capture downtown Houston skyline with IH45 in view so an aerial was our best option so this area of the cityscape is looking at the Theater district of the city. Houston also has a reputation of a place to see top notched performing art along with access to several museums in the area. The Theater distric performing art has nine major performing art group along with six performance halls. You can see Opera, a plays, the ballet and any number of music events including the well known Houston Symphony Orchestra. Houston is a large city with a population around 2.3 million people which makes it the fourth most populous city in the US and the biggest in Texas and the southern US. The skyline of Houston is a very impressive site with some of the tallest modern skyscrapers buildings in the US. In this image you can see the Heritage Plaza, Chevron, Wells Fargo and the tallest building in Houston the J P Morgan Chase Tower at 1002 ft and it is the 17 tallest in the US. Houston is the seat of Harris county and was founded in 1837 near the banks of the Buffalo Bayou or Allen Landing as it is called today. The city was name after General San Houston after he won the battle of San Jacinto. Houston has been a growing city because of the port of houston and railroads along with oil boom from the early 1901. Houston has other industry that have made it thrive in america such as energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, and transportation. Also NASA mission control is located in the city. Houston has also taken the lead on health care with many people coming to the Medical Center for top notch doctors and hospital with the latest advancement in medical care. 5 reasons to hire a licensed drone pilot

  1. Follow the law and have a license

One of the most important reasons to hire a licensed pilot that we’ve lightly touched on is staying legal. When you hire a drone pilot, they have a huge responsibility to deliver a service that is responsible and safe for the public. Licensed drone service providers have spent countless hours learning about the rules and regulations established by the FAA. A Part 107 Licensed Drone Pilot will know where they can legally fly, how high they can fly, what weather is safe to fly in, how to retrieve permission to fly in different classes of airspace, and how to properly plan and execute the mission as well as many hours of experience in different conditions and has been vetted by The Department of Transportation back ground check process.

It’s illegal by federal statute (a crime), for anyone to “knowingly and willfully” employ an individual who does not have an airman’s certificate, to act in that capacity. See: 49 U.S. Code § 46306(b)(8). The penalty is a fine of up to $250,000.00, or up to 3 years, or both.

  1. Carry at least $1M in Liability Insurance

Because these licensed drone pilots are operating commercially, they want to protect not only themselves and their business, but also anyone else who might be around the operation. While it is not currently required by law for drone pilots to have insurance, it is very likely a responsible drone pilot will. When seeking out a drone service provider, we recommend you always check with the pilot what kind of insurance they are carrying.

  1. Have your safety and the safety of others in mind

One of the highest priorities of a licensed drone operator is safety, after all, their reputation as a drone service provider and a business is always at stake. Licensed drone pilots have spent hours learning the FAA rules and regulations to make their business legal and in the process have learned about the many effects that weather, temperature, and other factors can play into their flights. Anytime we go out to fly we make a point to take into account all the factors that may be present including time of day, obstructions, wind speed, etc. When selecting a drone service provider you want to make sure they are taking your safety and the safety of everyone around the operation into consideration. It’s one thing to put a drone up in the air, it’s another to do it safely.

  1. Deliver a quality product and service

Even if you hire a licensed drone pilot, the quality of work is going to vary for many reasons. While there is no guarantee, it’s fairly safe to assume that you’ll receive a better quality of service from a licensed pilot than you will from an unlicensed pilot, because once again, their reputation as a business is always on the line. Delivering high-quality content and high-quality services are at the core of Up, Beyond Media’s philosophy, we believe no matter how big or small the project, it is imperative to always put our best foot forward. When choosing a licensed drone pilot, make sure you find one who can deliver the quality you want and need for your project.

  1. Understand the importance of professionalism

When you hire a professional, you expect them to handle themselves professionally. Professionals, in any industry, have an established processes. We follow a set of standard operating procedures for each and every project we tackle, it starts with analyzing the scope of the project, determining the class of airspace the project will take place in, whether or not any waivers are required from the FAA, planning the flight missions, etc. Once all the preliminary planning is done, then the fun begins. Just like flying a manned aircraft, flying an unmanned aircraft requires many checklists. Any professional drone pilot will adhere to a strict list of procedures to ensure they get the job done safely and still have fun.

These are just a few things to consider when seeking out a drone service provider for whatever your needs may be. Obviously we’d love for you to hire us, but more importantly, we want you to hire a drone service provider who plays by the rules, and has everyone’s best interests in mind. This is an emerging industry and the last thing we want is for the FAA to create stricter regulations that limit our ability to provide our service to you.

Why hire a licensed and insured drone pilot and not the kid next door

Why hire a licensed and insured drone pilot and not the kid next door

When looking for a drone service provider it may seem easier just to go to Craigslist and hire the college kid who is trying to make a couple bucks on the side, but is he or she licensed? “But I just need a couple quick shots, I don’t care if they are licensed” you might say. While this may be the case, there are many reasons you shouldn’t hire just anyone with a drone (or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as they are more formally referred to) to get you those shots you need to sell your real estate listing, capture your event from above, or inspect your crops.

For the longest time, it was a very gray area, hiring a drone operator. The rules were not clearly defined, but all that has changed since August 29, 2016. The FAA released the new Part 107 regulations that codified the commercial use of drones in United States airspace.

Now if you hire an unlicensed and/or un-insured provider you can be held liable for any injuries, crashes etc.  If you are a real estate agent / broker the consequences can be rather stiff including loss of real estate / broker’s license as well as committing a federal crime.

This is an excerpt of an email from a FAA official about the use of unlicensed operators.

“Liability for unauthorized operations can fall on both the pilot and the person who hired the pilot.
14 CFR 1.1 defines operator as:
“Operate, with respect to aircraft, means use, cause to use or authorize to use aircraft, for the purpose (except as provided in §91.13 of this chapter) of air navigation including the piloting of aircraft, with or without the right of legal control (as owner, lessee, or otherwise).”

In this case, someone who causes the operation can be liable as well. And with the way the civil penalty provision is written, the pilot would only face a fine of $1,100 per violation (as an individual acting as an airman), while the person who causes the operation could be liable for a fine of $11,000 (as an individual not acting as an airman).

Regards,
FAA UAS Integration Office”

The S900 with the Sony A7R ready to fly

So, if you’re going to hire a drone pilot, these are some of the reasons you’ll want to make sure they are a licensed and experienced drone pilot and not just some kid who picked up a new DJI Mavic Pro, or GoPro Karma.

Legal
A licensed drone pilot has spent extensive time learning the laws and regulations established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and has passed certification tests from the FAA and has been vetted by The Department of Transportation back ground check process.

Insured
If there is a mishap, you don’t want to find out the hard way how much damage a drone falling out of the sky can create, and cost. Always use someone that is insured.

Safety
Aside from getting their job done, it is their mission to make sure that everyone is safe. Part of the extensive training the pilot goes through is knowing when to fly and when not to fly.

Quality
The pilot has the reputation of themselves and their business to uphold, so you know that you are going to get a high-quality finished product.

Professional
Professionalism is top priority. As the customer, we know that you want someone who will do the job right and do it well. Hiring a licensed and insured drone pilot will deliver professionalism 100%.

Sunset Over the Texas Hills

We captured this aerial image of the sunset in the Texas Hill Country near Vanderpool. Just thought it was so pretty here with valleys and hills through out. Motorcyclist like to travel the twisted roads below, this is part of what is called the twisted sisters since they wind through out the hills of the western hill country which is very rugged. However many people have died along this stretch so be careful. Most people don’t realize how diverse and awesome Texas scenery can be.

Austin Skyline Aerial

After what seems likes months of nothing but over cast and rain we finally had a good day with partly cloudy skys and sun on Memorial day. We captured the following 2 images of the Austin skyline just before sun set. You may notice there are no one on the water on the holiday. The LCRA had closed the lakes due to flood waters and were releasing flood water from Lake Travis. The first image is about an hour before sun set and the second was just as the sun dipped below the horizon behind us.

We capture this Austin Skyline along Lady Bird Lake with the downtown area including the Texas Capital and the UT Tower in this Panorama. The one day where we saw the sun come out in some time. This image capture the view down Lady Bird Lake with the Lamar bridge, all the way to Congress with the city along the shoreline. (Tod Grubbs & Cynthia Hestand)

Lake Travis is finally full

We have been waiting for months to get this image with light clouds with the lake full after 6 years of drought and supper low levels. The lake is less than 1 foot from full when we captured this image.

This is an aerial pano view of Lake Travis taken at around 300 AGL ft. We loved that the lake is finally full for the first time in many years and we had good clouds and sky on this day. You can see the marina below, along with the dam, and the full bowl of the lake and you can also see the river channel as it meanders though the hill country. (Tod Grubbs & Cynthia Hestand)

Ever changing Austin Skyline

The skyline in Austin has been growing over the last few years. We captured a new aerial panorama last night from Auditorium shores showing several new buildings now the cranes are down. I just love how the skys of the setting sun reflects off the buildings as twilight takes hold and the lights of the buildings come on.

This is an panorama image of the Austin skyline in downtown. This image captured the first street bridge and congress bridge as they cross Lady Bird Lake. Also in this image is landmark buildings like the Frost, Austonian, W building along with the Austin City Hall and many other familiar buildings in the downtown area. (Tod Grubbs & Cynthia Hestand)
